Support your community by shopping small in Delaware

Shop Small Saturday is a national day of awareness and celebration of independent businesses. It takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and is a great opportunity to support local businesses and entrepreneurs. It’s an awesome way to support your community, or even learn about your new community if you’re in the process of moving or house hunting.

Delaware is home to a thriving small business community, with over 100,000 businesses statewide. These businesses employ over half of the state’s workforce, and contribute over $30 billion to the state’s economy.

Shop Small Saturday is a great way to support these businesses and help them thrive. By shopping local, you are not only getting great products and services, but you are also helping to keep money in your community. I can personally vouch for just how important supporting small businesses can be for those professionals. This is how we survive – supporting us allows us to continue thriving, even in uncertain times.

Here are a few ways to participate in Shop Small Saturday in Delaware:

  • Shop at your favorite local stores.
  • Support local restaurants by buying gift cards or takeout.
  • Attend local events and festivals.
  • Use social media to promote local businesses (this one is FREE!).

Shop Small Saturday is a great way to show your support for local businesses and make a difference in your community. So get out there and shop small!

Here are a few specific examples of how you can support small businesses in Delaware on Shop Small Saturday:

  • Take a walk down the main streets in towns like Lewes, Dover, Milford, Harrington, Middletown or other areas. These historic streets are lined with charming shops and restaurants that typically have sales on Shop Small Saturday.
  • Grab tickets to Shellville in Rehoboth Beach. An article in the News Journal reads, “Schell Brothers, a homebuilding company ubiquitous to the Delaware beaches, is in its sixth year of hosting Schellville. It’s a 5.5-acre Christmas village full of everything anyone looking to indulge in the Christmas spirit could hope for – and it’s free. ‘It’s like a Christmas playground for everyone,’ Schell Brothers’ spokesperson Alyssa Titus says in a promotional video. There’s a skating rink, a playground, faux snow, a “sledding” slide, a miniature Christmas village, mini-golf, a ride-on miniature train, a maze, a beer garden, fire pits, Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves, over 1,000 Christmas trees, live music, bars, over 30 vendors and food trucks.”
  • Support small businesses on Facebook or other social media. This is free to you and helps share that business with everyone in your newsfeed. Extra kudos if you do a live video about the business!

Shop Small Saturday is a great way to support local businesses and make a difference in your current or new community. So get out there and shop small! What is on your list this year?
